Cupertino Celebrates 70 Years of Cityhood

This year, the City of Cupertino is celebrating the 70th anniversary of Cupertino’s official incorporation as Santa Clara County’s 13th city!

In 1954, the Cupertino-Monta Vista Improvement Association, a committee of local leaders, and the Fact-Finding Committee began a drive for incorporation. By a slim margin vote of 231 to 185, Cupertino officially voted to become its own city.

Ever since its incorporation on October 10, 1955, the City of Cupertino has been a place that has brought pioneers from many cultures together as it continues to grow and adapt to each new era. Cupertino has a deep, rich, and wonderful history filled with hard work, innovation, and strong community building. To all residents of Cupertino, happy 70th anniversary!

2025 CREST Awards Winners

As part of the celebration, the City will recognize the 2025 CREST Awards winners during the Cupertino Community Service Awards ceremony. These awards honor individuals and organizations whose volunteer service has left a lasting mark on the community. The 2025 CREST Award honorees are as follows: 

Dennis Whittaker

Dennis Whittaker | Lifetime Achievement

Dennis Whittaker has been an active volunteer in Cupertino since 1974, shaping community life for more than 50 years. From founding the annual Easter Bunny Run to leading the Cupertino Jaycees, Optimist Club, and Chamber of Commerce, Dennis has played a role in countless programs and events that have enriched the city. A U.S. Army veteran, he co-founded the Cupertino Veterans Memorial and continues to co-chair the Veterans Day ceremony each year. His leadership in civic organizations, community groups, and veteran causes has left a lasting legacy that exemplifies the spirit of Cupertino. 

Raymond Lancon

Raymond Lancon | Volunteer of the Year

For 20 years, Raymond Lancon has quietly but consistently uplifted the Cupertino community through his service with the Cupertino De Anza Lions Club. A dedicated volunteer and leader, Ray has supported food drives, vision clinics, student programs, and fundraising events, while also personally delivering clothing and supplies to farmworker families. Known for stepping in wherever help is needed, he has been a dependable presence across every major club initiative. His humility, generosity, and commitment to service embody the true spirit of volunteerism.

Cupertino Little League Board Members

Cupertino Little League | Organization of the Year

For decades, Cupertino Little League has brought the joy of baseball to more than 200 children each year, teaching teamwork, sportsmanship, and resilience both on and off the field. Entirely volunteer-run, the league includes the Challenger Division, ensuring children of all abilities can experience the fun of the game. Through events such as opening and closing ceremonies, ballpark outings, and community gatherings, Cupertino Little League has become a cornerstone of youth development and community connection.

Sarah Shelke

Sarah Shelke |Rising Star of the Year

Sarah Shelke is the founder of Mind4Youth, a nonprofit dedicated to breaking barriers around youth mental health. What began as a personal mission inspired by her family’s experience has grown into a global movement with over 118 chapters, 21,000 volunteers, and 2.1 million people reached worldwide. Through creative initiatives like HeartCare, Self-Care, PageCare, and ArtCare, Sarah has provided thousands of youth with resources, support, and mentorship. In just three years, she has mobilized her peers in Cupertino and beyond to create a culture of openness, compassion, and hope.

Rayna Shah

Rayna Shah | Rising Star of the Year

Rayna Shah has dedicated the past three years to elevating the voice of Cupertino’s youth. As a two-term Teen Commissioner and Chair, Vice President of the Youth Activity Board, and volunteer with Cupertino Parks & Recreation, she has led programs ranging from spelling bees to teen hackathons. Rayna also founded the Youth-Led Organization program, providing visibility for teen-run nonprofits and businesses through City platforms. Her leadership has empowered her peers to engage in civic life and strengthened opportunities for youth across Cupertino.

Deputy Aalok Patel

Deputy Aalok Patel | Hometown Hero

Deputy Aalok Patel serves the Cupertino community through the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office with dedication and compassion. As a School Resource Officer, he has built trusted relationships with students, families, and educators, enhancing public safety while fostering an environment of respect and support. His commitment to mentorship, education, and collaboration has bridged gaps between law enforcement and the community, setting an example of service that goes beyond duty. Deputy Patel’s leadership and care make him a true hometown hero.
